Launching a longtime burden into action, Bro. Tim Pruitt and the fellowship of Evening Light Tabernacle of Homer, La., hosted their first Family Camp May 30-June 3 at Scottsville Camp in Marshall, Texas.
Evening Light has operated a youth camp in Louisiana for about 25 years, traditionally held on Easter week.
"We just had a desire to do something for the families," Bro. Pruitt explained. "It's been heavy on my heart for a long time."
As soon as youth camp was finished, the local believers began anew, preparing for another camp. They didn’t know what to expect.
Families journeyed from as far as Canada for the inaugural meetings, filling up all the available family cabins and lodges. One camper labeled the experience a tiny “slice of Heaven,” being immersed in the company of believers morning, noon and night.
Children ages 3-11 enjoyed vacation Bible School activities in the morning while their parents attended services. Bro. Pruitt delivered teaching messages each morning while Bro. Danny Stemen (House of Fellowship/Sarsasota, Fla.) and Bro. Ron Spencer (Full Gospel Lighthouse/Elkton, Va.) preached evangelicalistic messages each evening.
Rather than delve into family problems like marital strife and disciplining children, the ministry focused on teaching sound doctrine and encouraging the believers' faith.
"A good dose of the Holy Ghost is what people need to fix the problems in their life," said Bro. Pruitt, who has been ministering since age 15.
Campers also enjoyed an assortment of recreation, including basketball, whiffle ball, soccer, volleyball and canoeing. A group of athletic brothers accepted a whiffle ball challenge from the camp staff, crushing the staff's spotless record with an overwhelming victory.
The youngest campers then had the opportunity to slip, slop and wallow in a prepared mud pit. One by one, they sat at the top of a slide, shiny and clean, then plunged into the muck with a splash. It might not have been “good, clean fun,” but it was certainly messy fun!
New friends were made, and good times were shared. Lord willing, Evening Light will host another Family Camp to kick off the summer next year. The tentative dates are May 29-June 2, 2013.
Archived services from this year’s inaugural Family Camp may be viewed on the Evening Light Tabernacle website at www.eveninglight.net.
